SPORTS IN ACHIMOTA SCHOOL
Not only is this great school noted for its academic excellence but also for its splendid performance in sports. As interesting as sports may seem to others, some others however see it as a one to exhibit what is not yet established in them and so build upon it. The school offers various sports including soccer, table tennis, hockey, cricket, basketball, lawn tennis and athletics.
Sporting activities in the school are planned on term - by - term basis to coincide with the greater Accra School Sports Association (GASST) program for inter-school games competition. During this period the best of all the students who justify their inclusion in the team are chosen to represent the school in External Competitions against other school.
Most often, the first term of the academic year is noted for inter-house Basketball and soccer competitions, with cricket recently introduced into the system as part of the annual inter-house games. The basketball champs for the year 2000 were Aggrey House for the boys and Slessor House for the girls. Gyamfi also emerged as winner of the Cricket competition in the year 2001.
The inter houses Athletics competition which is the most popular event of the year apart from soccer is normally organized during the 3rd term.
The Students Representative Council also helps organize other games and fairs, which are not in the years sports program or calendar. A typical example is the Mo-Fiesta which had the idea of raising a lot of money for the purchasing of systems to save the school a lot of money instead of going to hire "spinners" who ask for huge amounts.
Recent friendly matches against Ghana International School (GIS) in Basketball and soccer was a bit of a disappointment on the basketball side, but on the soccer side, the boys team had a smooth victory, winning by 6 goals to 3.
We are so lucky here in Achimota to have all the necessary facilities at our disposal. For that reason the school has a very bright future. As long as students are willing to take part advantage of these facilities to be able to have a strong foundation here and to be able to deliver in the outside world.
