ACHIMOTA SCHOOL LIBRARY

Achimota School Library has been in existence since the establishment of the school. From the cradle to date, it aimed at accommodating students for research and mainly read for pleasure. Though it has achieved its aim, it has not satisfied students.

Today, the library as it stands cannot cater for the growing needs of the large student population. Plans for a new, bigger library building are far advanced but funding has been a major set back.

The library has a qualified librarian who is assisted by a clerk. Achimota school library is rated as one of the best government school libraries. There is also a library prefect who is the link between the student body and the library staff. The library staff makes acquisition for relevant materials to keep abreast with time ranging from local dailies to periodicals like ‘Newsweek’, ‘Readers Digest’, ‘African Farming’, ‘West Africa’ and others. Other materials such as economic review bulletin, information on the energy and mining sector and government records or information relevant for academic work is also available in the library.

The library purchases most of its textbooks, novels, encyclopaedias, and biographies but also receives numerous donations from various groups like The Old Achimotan Association (OAA). The library abroad also receives prospectus from foreign universities.

The library operates from the hours of 10:30am to 5:30pm (GMT) under the supervision of the library staff. The staff classifies and catalogues information on the books, prepare indexes and abstracts, and advertise for the awareness of the library collection to it’s numerous patrons

And finally see to other administrative work.

The library prefect assists the library staff by informing the students about the most recent development in the library, help maintain the correct arrangement of the books in the library by organizing frequent clean-ups involving students and carries on criticisms and suggestions from the student body to the library staff.

On special occasions like the school’s founder’s day, United Nations Day, Ghana’s Independence Anniversary; the library mounts exhibitions to reflect what has been achieved in these respects. For materials in the library to thrive, regular fumigation is done to reduce infestation.

The library which is housed in the school’s administration block has not been favored for the provision of air conditioners to maintain a cool temperature to reduce the tropical condition because of the old model of the block.

I hereby appeal to organizations, individuals, or donor groups to assist the school in the funding of a new library complex.
