With all the noise about HIV/AIDS its
only natural that such a club be formed. The HIV/AIDS kickers club
(which is HIVAK for short) as the name suggest a youth club set
up basically to boost the morale of the youth mainly to banish, as much
as possible, sexual promiscuity among the youth. It was formed by the
ideas of some young medical students.
HIVAK club was initiated in Achimota School not so long ago but
from all angles, it prophesies success. The HIVAK club has many
braches in second cycle schools across the country. These include Accra
Academy, Accra Girls, St. Mary’s, Presec and what have you and as will
be expected these school are notably ahead of us in their activities since
the HIVAK club was started in these schools long ago. Although
it’s new this hasn’t affect the number of capable and determined students
who have joined the club. The club notwithstanding how new, can boast
of over thirty members which in my opinion is not bad for beginners.
The club usually holds its meetings on Saturdays from eleven thirty in
the morning to twelve thirty in the afternoon, which is very convenient
for the patrons to come and talk to us about various topics/issues. These
discussions are mostly based on interesting real-life issues relating
to the HIV/AIDS epidemic and most of the members contribute to
the discussion. The patrons also give advice on how to prevent and solve
these issues as they come along. They’re usually here because the Saturdays
they don’t have lectures and other expedient engagements.
The functions of the club are numerous. First of all, they educate the
youth about what AIDS is about and how to abstain. As will be expected
the cliché of the club is A, B, C, D. The acronym for Abstain,
Be faithful, Condom use and Don’t share unsterilized needles, syringes
and razor blades. The club teaches the members to educate others about
the adverse effects of AIDS. Not only do they concern themselves about
HIV/AIDS but health as a whole. This can be shown in the various
clean-up campaigns they organize nationwide. These are some of the functions
of the club just to mention a few.
Back to where it originates from. This club became a reality due to the
fast, resourceful medical students at the Korle-Bu Teaching hospital.
The overall head of the society is Mr. Bright Teye. There are other executives
in the club who may be patrons in other schools. The following are the
executives of the Achimota School HIVAK club:

in the school.
