Out of Achimota evolved the University of Ghana, whose first intake consisted
mainly of Achimota students. The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and
Technology, Kumasi (formerly university of science and technology) also
began with a nucleus of Achimota students. Since 1948 Achimota has concentrated
on secondary education. In 1949, it led the way in the establishment of
6th form education in Ghana and made a significant contribution to the
development of university education by providing the high quality academic
material required for the expanding universities.
Music has always played a very important part in the life of the school.
Achimota’s achievements in attaining a high standard in this field has
lead to important developments such as the establishment of the National
Orchestra ,and the school of Music at Winneba. From its inception Achimota
placed a special emphasis on the value of the use of ones hands in agriculture,
technical and vocational. Achimota has concerned itself to set a standard
of excellence in whatever field of education that meets the national needs.
Achimota school has produced many men and women who have attained excellence
in their professions such as doctors, lawyers, engineers, educators, architects,
diplomats, computer scientists, agriculturists, scientists, Accountants
etc. In the political scene out of the four elected presidents that the
country has had so far, three of them attended Achimota School. Many ministers
of state are also old students of this school. Achimota School has also
produced many lawyers, doctors, engineers, architects and lecturers who
in their various ways are helping in the development of the country.
